The right approach depends on the condition of the lens. Light surface haze may respond well to a polish and protectant. Heavy oxidation, peeling factory coating, deep scratches, or moisture inside the housing require a more meticulous process. Rushing the job with an abrasive product can leave a lens clearer for a few days, then worse than before.
Why Headlights Become Foggy
Most modern headlights use polycarbonate plastic rather than glass. It is durable, lightweight, and impact resistant, but it is vulnerable to ultraviolet exposure. Heat, road salt, bugs, harsh chemicals, and regular washing gradually wear away the factory UV coating on the outer surface.
As that coating breaks down, the plastic oxidizes. The result is the familiar cloudy or yellow appearance that diffuses light instead of allowing it to pass through cleanly. How to Restore Foggy Headlights Without Damaging Them

Skipping the final protection step is the most common reason a restored headlight quickly turns cloudy again.
Start with a careful inspection
Wash the headlights and surrounding paint first. Dirt and grit can create additional scratches during polishing, while bug residue and road film can make the lens appear more damaged than it is.
Once the surface is clean and dry, inspect it in direct light. Mild haze feels mostly smooth and may be corrected with a dedicated plastic polish. Rough yellow oxidation, visible pitting, peeling clear coating, or pronounced scratches usually require wet sanding before polishing. Examine the edges as well, since oxidation often remains near trim lines when the area has not been properly masked.
Protect the paint, trim, and surrounding panels
Use quality automotive masking tape around the headlight perimeter. This matters more than many DIY guides suggest. Sanding discs, polish residue, and machine pads can easily mark painted bumper covers, fenders, black trim, and chrome accents.
Avoid household tape where possible. It can lift in water, leave adhesive behind, or provide too little protection at panel edges. A professional detailer will also control the work area carefully so overspray and abrasive residue do not settle onto nearby surfaces.
Remove oxidation gradually

Keep the lens and abrasive lubricated with clean water. Use even, overlapping passes instead of concentrating pressure in one spot. The lens may look uniformly dull during this stage, which is expected. The goal is to level the damaged surface, not to create a temporary shine before the defects are removed.
Move through progressively finer grits to erase the scratch pattern from the prior step. This is where patience makes the difference. If coarse sanding marks remain, polishing may make the headlight look better from a distance while leaving distorted light output and visible scratches up close.
Polish for optical clarity
After refinement sanding, use a plastic-safe compound and polishing pad to bring clarity back to the lens. Heat management is essential. Excessive pad speed, pressure, or time in one area can overheat polycarbonate and create haze, warping, or localized damage.
A controlled polishing process should restore a clear, even finish across the full lens. Check the headlight from several angles and under strong lighting. A lens can look clear straight on while retaining sanding marks or cloudy patches along its curvature.
For light oxidation only, polishing may be sufficient without sanding. This is the least invasive option and preserves more of the original material. It is not, however, a shortcut for badly degraded lenses.
Apply a true UV protectant
This final step determines how long the restoration lasts. Bare, freshly polished polycarbonate can begin oxidizing again quickly when exposed to sun and weather. A dedicated headlight UV coating is the preferred solution because it creates a sacrificial protective layer designed for plastic lenses.
Some restoration kits include a wipe-on sealant or aerosol coating. These can work when the surface preparation is thorough and the product is applied evenly in the right conditions. Uneven coating, dust contamination, or applying too heavily can leave streaks, runs, or a patchy finish.
Ceramic-based protectants can add hydrophobic behavior and additional protection, but they are not always a substitute for a purpose-built UV coating on a fully sanded lens. The best option depends on the condition of the headlight, the preparation method, and how the vehicle is stored.
Common Headlight Restoration Mistakes
Toothpaste, baking soda, and other household remedies are popular because they can make a lens look brighter for a short period. They are not a long-term restoration method. Their mild abrasives may remove surface film, but they do not reliably level deep oxidation or replace UV protection.
Another mistake is using a high-speed drill attachment without controlling heat and pressure. A drill can be useful in experienced hands, but it is easy to burn edges, create uneven clarity, or sling compound onto paint and trim. Hand polishing is safer for minor haze, while professional equipment and technique are better suited to severe deterioration.
Do not ignore the headlight beam pattern after restoration. If the lens is clear but the road still appears poorly lit, the issue may be an aging bulb, incorrect bulb installation, moisture damage, hazed reflector surfaces, or a headlight aiming problem. Restoring the lens is one part of a complete visibility check.
When Restoration Is Not the Best Option
Headlight restoration has limits. Replacement may be the better investment when a housing is cracked, badly leaking, heavily crazed on the inside, or missing mounting tabs. Internal reflector damage can also reduce performance even if the outer lens is polished to a near-new appearance.
Replacement assemblies vary widely in quality. Low-cost aftermarket lights may fit poorly, fog prematurely, or produce an inferior beam pattern. For luxury, performance, and late-model vehicles with adaptive lighting components, replacement can be significantly more involved and should be evaluated carefully before purchasing parts.
